Day 27/11-Mountains are Made for Climbing
Written by Jon on 09 April 2010
I woke up to a very delicious home cooked breakfast at the B&B. It happened to be one of the little girls birthdays who was staying there so we sung her happy birthday after breakfast and they made her mini cupcakes. Bob and Samuel met me at about 9am to start our ride. After taking some pictures and telling everyone goodbye we were off. If it had not been for Bob the ride would have been much tougher. He advised me to ride in a higher cadence and lower gear to make it easier on my knees. We had some intelligent conversation going up the mountain about genetics, the aftermath of the hurricane in Louisiana, the history of Kingston, and modern society. Before we knew it we were at the top thanking Bob for all his help. He does the ride regularly and said he usually takes a nap on a picnic table before making the descent home to Kingston. We chatted with some others at the summit and rode off while Bob laid down for his nap. The ride down the mountain was extremely fun, but also very cold. It was high speed twists with nearly no pedaling required. A rare occasion for a trip like this. We had to pull over a few times to warm up. Once the ride down the mountain was over we had a little flatland and then were quickly back to rolling hills. We planned on stopping somewhere for warm drinks, but there was nowhere between the mountain and Silver City. We pedaled on throughout the day and chatted about many things. Samuel is a graduate of an ivy league school and also a war veteran who was wounded in Iraq. It was very interesting hearing his views on present day issues. About 5 miles before Silver City we phoned a lady who lets cyclists stay at her B&B for free. She said we could stay as many nights as we like and gave us directions. We arrived about 6pm and she showed us around. It was a nice 2 bedroom apartment with all the amenities. We decided to take her up on the offer and make the next day a much needed rest day.
