Good morning all, the gold plating was put on the silver and it can be removed. I don't know the process and I don't know what it would do to the silver itself. A friend (collector) I knew way back and I actually talked about this around year 2000. He owned a metal fabrication shop. He said he had chemicals that could remove the gold plating pretty easily. But why would someone want to do that was where we ended up. You have to remember your 2000 is roughly when strikes were slowly switching to clads and a lot of collectors were ending their hobby and moving on. Strikes were dropping a bit in value so to create a mule was basically ruining a perfectly good strike.

Again, yes the gold plating can be removed, but what that would do to the silver and especially the mirror finish I have no idea.
