As with all things, there are more questions than answers. But, the following should help.
Lucky Buck tokens originated in the early 1990s following the legalization of limited-stakes gambling in the historic Colorado mountain towns of Black Hawk, Central City, and Cripple Creek. Because state law originally capped maximum bets at five dollars, casinos relied heavily on physical slot machines that used one-dollar coins. To compete for tourists, marketing groups and bus tour operators created the Lucky Buck as a promotional tool. The name was a play on the slang term for a dollar and Colorado's Western wildlife. These tokens were distributed via direct mail, travel packages, and coupons, allowing visitors to redeem them at participating casinos for real slot play. The concept became so popular that casinos eventually minted premium, limited-edition versions made of one ounce of pure silver. These silver rounds were used in specialized slot machines or sold as souvenirs. Today, both the base-metal and silver Lucky Bucks are collected as historic relics from the launch of Colorado's casino industry.
