According to sources, in the fall of 1997, there was a SR set of 3 different
strikes placed into the strike machine at Sam's Town.
They included the following:
#1 - Design Side: Gold Panner
#2 - Design Side: Pony Express
#3 - Design Side: Stage Coach
Three days after being loaded in the strike machine, a staff member noticed
that on the backs of all 3 SR designs that said: "Sam Boyd's Fremont" which
should have said: "Sam Boyd's Sam's Town".
The strikes were removed from the strike machines, and back stock was sent
back to the provider which was CT - Mint (Casino Tokens) to be melted down.
Sources said that less than 50 each of the 3 strike design errors had gotten
out to the public before management was made aware of the error.
Shortly there after, Sam's Town switched mints from CT (Casino Tokens)
to GDC - Mint (Green Duck Corporation)
About 16 months later in 1999, the SR set of three were released with the
backs corrected to say: Sam Boyd's Sam's Town.
Within 6 months of the second release, Sam's town had again switched mints
this time to S - Mint (Sunshine Mint) which also released the SR set of those
3 strikes in 1999. These were known as the "S - Overstrike" because all three
of the different strikes in the set had the overstrike on the "S" mint mark.
