Here's my take, I played for that strike when it was in play and do not recall seeing vertical marks. If marks were part of the minting process then vertical marks should be raised above strike surface. Your vertical appear to be consist with vice marks of some sort, either at the time of minting or after. Possibly at time of minting if needed to make insert flush with ring.
